It is not surprising that most mutations, which are
caused by sudden alterations of specific genes, are
harmful or even fatal. Every once in a while,
however, a chance mutation gives an organism a
certain advantage over other individuals. Webbed
toes, for example, allow for more efficient
swimming. Similarly, thicker coats allow for survival
in cooler temperatures. According to evolutionary
theory, this advantage encourages the survival of an
organism. The trait is then passed on to its
offspring. These offspring are more likely to survive
and produce more advantaged offspring. Thus,

문단 중간쯤에 according 문장, 진화론에 따르면 이점은 생명체의 생존력을 높여준다고 되있고요
그 밑밑에 보면 후손들은 더 잘 살아남고 더 이로운(살아남기에) 후손을 남긴다
그러므로 변종을 통해서 한 종류는 다른 환경에서 더 잘 경쟁(살아남기위한 경쟁이겠죠?)을 할 수 있게 해주는 특성을 개발할수 있다
