Question

Human minds have learned quiet a bit about consciousness and its relation to brain function over the past century or so: much more than was conceived by the classical Greek philosophers over two thousand years ago, more than was known in the days of Isaac Newton and John Locke, and more than was understood in the days of eminent philosopher william James near the end of the 19th century. Nevertheless, the phenomenon of consciousness remains the pre-eminent unsolved challenge of our age. Not only do we not have answers, we are unsure of the right questions. This is not to say that consciousness study lies beyond the reach of scientific research. Excellent scientific data are readily available; however, the central theme that permeates our discourse is a delicate balance between knowledge and ignorance: how much we know, but how little we know of consciousness.
